Distributing the Future at our 30th Anniversary

Alan & Priscilla’s 30th anniversary celebration was one of the few cases where we literally distributed the Future. In this case, the Future came in the form of a commemorative, re-usable, thank-you video greeting card we gave out at the event.

Video cards of this sort were a new thing back then, and really haven’t caught on much since (sometimes the Future is slow to get here). But the cards provided a fun and functional way for guests to relive, or in same cases experience for the first time, our 1986 wedding. And some of the events which had happened since.

The card also let us make one prediction about the Future that we were pretty sure would be accurate: we invited everyone to join us in Oregon for the upcoming 2017 solar eclipse (“the best way to predict the future is to compute it“). Plus the card let us have fun with 1986’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, released within days of our wedding.

The cards were re-usable, and we gave everyone a micro-USB cable by which they could upload their own content onto the card. And the cards included an easter egg, which a couple of our guests were able to find and return to us as requested!
